(Hint: It\u2019s Not Good)<\/a><\/b><br \/>\nBy Patrick Range McDonald, July 14, 2021<\/span><\/p>\n<div><b><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><i>Excerpts:<\/p>\n<p><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\"><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">YIMBY stands for \u201cYes In My Back Yard.\u201d It\u2019s a clever twist on NIMBY or \u201cNot In My Back Yard.\u201d NIMBYs have a controversial reputation for fighting new development in their communities. YIMBYs try to capitalize on that by using a moniker that sounds inclusive and appealing. Don\u2019t be fooled.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">YIMBYs embrace trickle-down economics or what\u2019s now called<\/span><a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; text-decoration-line: none; color: #1763b2;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.housingisahumanright.org\/trickle-down-housing-is-a-failure-heres-what-you-need-to-know\/\">\u00a0\u201ctrickle-down housing\u201d policy<\/a><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\"><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">. As middle- and working-class people have long known, trickle-down anything doesn\u2019t work \u2014 except to make the rich richer.\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">YIMBYs know\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; text-decoration-line: none; color: #1763b2;\" href=\"http:\/\/zillow.mediaroom.com\/2016-07-28-Rents-Rising-Fastest-Among-Low-End-Apartments\">developers built almost exclusively luxury housing<\/a><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\"><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">, and that is okay with them.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">YIMBYs a<\/span><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">re NOT housing justice activists. But for political reasons, YIMBYs are desperate to own housing justice credentials.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\"><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">YIMBYs have co-opted messaging from the housing justice movement and\u00a0joined housing justice coalitions. It\u2019s a strategy that continues to this day.<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">Despite their pro-gentrification agenda and clashes with housing justice activists, <\/span><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">many Democratic politicians champion YIMBYism and the mainstream media too often touts the YIMBY cause.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">Why?\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; text-decoration-line: none; color: #1763b2;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.housingisahumanright.org\/state-senator-scott-wiener-keeps-rolling-in-real-estate-campaign-cash\/\">Politicians take huge amounts of campaign cash from the real estate industry<\/a><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\"><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">, and YIMBYism gives them political cover to deregulate land-use protections and allow developers to build more luxury housing \u2014 and to generate huge profits \u2014 under the guise of solving the housing affordability crisis<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">\u201cThe YIMBY movement has a white privilege problem,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"box-sizing: border-box; text-decoration-line: none; color: #1763b2;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/la-pol-ca-housing-bill-failure-equity-groups-20180502-story.html\">Anya Lawler, a policy advocate with the Western Center on Law &amp; Poverty, told the\u00a0<em style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\"><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">. \u201cI don\u2019t think they recognize it. They don\u2019t understand poverty. They don\u2019t understand what that\u2019s like, who our clients really are and what their lived experience is.\u201d<\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: rgba(0,0,0,0.8);\">YIMBY leaders are consistently silent about the predatory practices of corporate landlords and developers.
