YIMBY stands for \u201cYes In My Back Yard.\u201d It\u2019s a clever twist on NIMBY or \u201cNot In My Back Yard.\u201d NIMBYs have a controversial reputation for fighting new development in their communities. YIMBYs try to capitalize on that by using a moniker that sounds inclusive and appealing. Don\u2019t be fooled.<\/span><\/span> <\/li>\n
YIMBYs embrace trickle-down economics or what\u2019s now called<\/span>\u00a0\u201ctrickle-down housing\u201d policy<\/a>. As middle- and working-class people have long known, trickle-down anything doesn\u2019t work \u2014 except to make the rich richer.\n
<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
YIMBYs know\u00a0<\/span>developers built almost exclusively luxury housing<\/a>, and that is okay with them.<\/span><\/span> <\/li>\n
YIMBYs a<\/span>re NOT housing justice activists. But for political reasons, YIMBYs are desperate to own housing justice credentials.\u00a0<\/span>YIMBYs have co-opted messaging from the housing justice movement and\u00a0joined housing justice coalitions. It\u2019s a strategy that continues to this day.<\/span><\/span> <\/li>\n
Despite their pro-gentrification agenda and clashes with housing justice activists, <\/span>many Democratic politicians champion YIMBYism and the mainstream media too often touts the YIMBY cause.\u00a0<\/span>Why?\u00a0<\/span>Politicians take huge amounts of campaign cash from the real estate industry<\/a>, and YIMBYism gives them political cover to deregulate land-use protections and allow developers to build more luxury housing \u2014 and to generate huge profits \u2014 under the guise of solving the housing affordability crisis<\/span><\/span> <\/li>\n
\u201cThe YIMBY movement has a white privilege problem,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Anya Lawler, a policy advocate with the Western Center on Law & Poverty, told the\u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t think they recognize it. They don\u2019t understand poverty. They don\u2019t understand what that\u2019s like, who our clients really are and what their lived experience is.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/li>\n
YIMBY leaders are consistently silent about the predatory practices of corporate landlords and developers. The silence speaks volumes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
